What is the penalty for not registering?
If you do not register, you could be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be put in jail for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment.
(See also What Happens if I Don't Register?).

Yeah, they say that, but you could also suffer similiar penalties for downloading mp3's. I'd like to see a recent case (past 25 years) where someone was actually prosecuted for failing to register.

I also disagree with their policy of drafting 19 year olds first. I think they should get a good cross section of men aged 18 to 30-35, and then determine fitness given a number of factors.

I don't support the draft, I support mandatory two year military service for all abled bodied males and females at the age of 18.

The draft is a failed concept. Since its inception during the civil war the rich could easily buy their way out. A mandatory service is more equal and forces the american people to think before sending soldiers into conflict.

Question If there was a draft...

where would people who 'claim' to be gay fit into it? Would the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy be thrown out? If not, then I'll bet we would see huge increase in the gay population should there be a draft.

If there were those who wanted to avoid the draft and claimed they were gay, just how far do you think the US Government would go in verifying that claim? Would Big Brother spy on you for a day, a week a month or even a year to gather evidence of your sexual orientation and lifestyle? Once someone was discovered to be in fact heterosexual, would they actually prosecute them for dodging the draft and defrauding the US Government?

Just some food for thought...(to add to the other interesting thoughts being applied in this discussion).

PS. I guess it's time to buy that condo in Toronto, ON!

It would seem the quickest way out, but I'm sure that the gov. would put a stop to it if too many use this excuse. I think Heinlein put it best "I feel about conscription like a lobster feel about a pot of boiling water. It may be his finest hour but it's not his choice."
In reality, I don't see it happening. As it stands now, the anti-war movement is fairly small and managable. Start a draft and it will grow tremendously.

AdamSmith

Is exactly right. Mandatory Service for all! Actually that's what I thought at first was Rep. Charles Rangel's proposal.

Default Anyone Read the Article

Did anyone read the article posted by Wookie - it sums up very well why the draft will never happen.

Stop worrying about it and get back to the business of this board = bashing Bush for everything/anything he does/doesn't do!

Barkhorn.
