Default Angel has serious anti-religion overtones

Is it just me or does the show Angel have some serious problems with religion?

The current story line is a great example. Jasmin is the embodiment of godliness amd beauty. Then you get touched by her blood and you see her true face, a rotting, evil demon. Her father, Conner, was born of two vampires (Angel and Darla)(symbolizing a virgin birth?). Her mother (Cordilia) was a higher power for a while... I can go on and on.

Powers That Be
Hell Dimensions
Vampire with a Soul

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I am enjoying the show though.

welcome.

no, it's not you. Joss Whedon is fairly anti religious and an open atheist. Jasmine is doing a good job of showing the bad of religion.

Joss has also managed that throughout the series, and in BtVS, and in Firefly, as short lived as that was...

Actually, BtVS has just been put down by Focus on the Family here

The PTB exist, but they kinda don't care, there is no overpowerful god, and Hell is the world we live in. And nothing matters except helping each other, because there is no reward at the end.

No, you aren't reading into it.

Thumbs up

Oh, you're just saying that because their Christ figure is really a maggot-infested demon who eats people.

How did you make that leap?

Oh, yay.

I'm already envisioning the victory chants from FoF over "how they got BtVS canceled mere weeks after they started their protests".

To quote from my bost on the "Buffy again" thread:

"The other was the subtle religious references. "I want to believe" is a religious statement as well as an X-Files homage; in some branches of Christianity, you eat God, while in Jasmine-worship, God eats you; you shall not leave her religion except by her blood; and Lorne, after he'd seen the truth about Jasmine, walked around sounding saying "Praise Jasmine," sounding like a cliched fundamentalist."

I noticed. I think it's a lot more serious a mocking than the alleged Buffy one. And I love it.

Don't forget that last night, the local archdiocese removed all false idols that weren't the one, true Jasmine god.

As much as it pains me to say it, the guy has a point...

And if they mocked atheism, neither FotF nor anyone else would have made a peep...so screw 'em.
