G.S.H.

Am I deeply concerned about the direction in which the radical, religious, Christian, conservatives, elected to office are leading our country? You bet I am! However, not only have I lived in this federal republic longer than you have, evidently I have taken the time to learn something about its history and the price people have paid to provide you, and everyone else, with the rights you have today.

Might I suggest that you take a few minutes of time, before you runaway, to look at two other periods in our history where oppressive conservatives ruled the day.

You might even gain some insights from learning about what happened to the conservative colonists that supported the Crown during the Revolutionary War. The ebb and flow of political, and judicial, party power has been with us for more than two centuries.

And don't forget that it was the Democratic, liberal, government of FDR that incarcerated thousands of Americans of Japanese descent during WW II, but did not do the same to the Americans of German, Italian, Rumanian, Austrian, etc. descent. Are you able to discern the common denominator in all these references? FEAR! Fear has just produced the "U.S. Patriot Act of 2001."
Would it pass constitutional muster with an unbiased SCOTUS? I think not. Would the Homeland Security Bill pass constitutional muster of an unbiased SCOTUS? Probably not. But who will challenge either of them when the threat (FEAR) level remains high?

So what is it that you are afraid will happen to you here that won't happen to you elsewhere? Do you really believe that Europe is a safer place for you? Upon what practical experience do you base your beliefs?

That is why I asked you if you had ever lived in Europe. I lived in Norway...which has the highest standard of living in the world according to all the reports that I have read. My youngest son and his family live there at this very moment because they live with his wife's parents and she is a member of their foreign embassy staff.

Personally I think that this mid-term election debacle for the Democratic Party is the best thing that could have happened to them. They were slaughtered by the conservative, religiously controlled, Republicans. If this isn't a wake-up call to all those who believe in progressive, rather than regressive, changes, I don't know what is.

Out of curiosity, have you ever read about the Americans that moved to the Soviet Union during the 1920' and 30's because they thought it was a freer and more rationally led society? Surprise! Surprise! And for those Americans who moved to France and Spain...surprise,surprise.

I am well versed in your fears. But I learned long ago that running away from them will only exascerbate, rather than resolve, them. If you don't like the way things are going here, then get off your academic ass and do something to change things instead of taking the cowards way out. (Might I also suggest that you read and appreciate the last 14 words of the Declaration of Independence. Without that kind of commitment, there would be no America for you to leave.)
