Alberta will be fighting this of course.

If you not Canadian you can think of Alberta as Texas North. Complete with cowboys.

I agree they'll try, but i don't see how they expect to do it. For all the talk of invoking the notwithstanding clause the definition of marriage isn't a provincial matter anyway.

That drunken bastard can kiss my ass

Yes, well, we do have a drunken oaf for a premier but unfortunately he's very popular, However, if king ralph does decide to use the notwithstanding clause, he will be pissing off a large ammount of albertans.

Why?

It's simple, Ralphy has told everybody that using the notwithstanding clause would require a provincewide binding referendum, If he goes back on his word, even on something like this, He will sow the wind as it were.

Meh, government should stay out of peoples personal lives anyway, chretien is doing the right thing with this new bill.

A wedding and a marriage are two separate things. Weddings don't have any real legal standing it is just a ritual. Marriage is a legal contract. At one time it was the same as a bill of sale where the property being bought was the bride.

Great! Marvellous! Superb! Etcetera.

But it's a shame that only three countries recognise gay marriages up to now :-/ (being The Netherlands, Belgium and Canada) I really do hope this is just the beginning.

No, I'm not happy because it makes us Americans feel so backward and stupid.

Hats off to Canada, and hopefully, all 50 states will soon pass a similar legislation. Maybe we need a law requiring conservative Christians to say only rational things in public (read: shut up), LOL.
