I reckon there must be loads of them, over here in Europe, but no one really cares enough to ask.

You mean when a cricket player gets 18 wickets in an ironmonger or whatever it is they do, he doesn't drop to his knees and genuflect?

GD,

After that "18 wickets in an ironmonger", you owe me a cup of coffee! I'll clean up the mess from my old one myself!

Maybe Wrestlemania XX could have HBK Shawn Michaels v Jesse Ventura, the winner proves if there is or isn't a god.

You guys forgot about me, the half-ironman triathlete. Oh wait, it was prominent. Its funny. I'm sure at some time or another runners and triathletes are asking god(s) for energy during a race. The thought never crossed my mind. I just tend to pass people.

It was especially telling at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Triathlon in Cleveland, how brutal it can be. I saw a couple of people who had wrecked in serious trouble, ie very very badly broken bones. Those were very troubling images for me, it did break my concentration for a bit. When I see that, I can't help but think that god isn't helping anyone out there.

I was thinking the same thing. I suppose to your average American, Europeon athletes don't really count anyway.

(BTW, whether pro-wrestlers like Jesse are considered athletes in a separate discussion. (I'd say no.) He certainly is not terribly athletic looking now. Probably was in his best shape as a Navy SEAL.)

Didn't Jesse cause a stir a few years ago when he stated something to the effect that Religion was a crutch for weak willed individuals?

Perhaps, but don't confuse religion with belief in a god.

I'd answer you about Ventura, but were getting off thread so maybe some other time. I believe it's been covered also in past threads.

HBO's Real Sports did a piece on this about 6 months ago. They featured offensive lineman Glenn Parker as one of the few atheist football players in the NFL and he claimed he was chastised because of it.

I read a body-building book a few years back written by Arnold
'Mr. Republican' Swarzenegger (sp?) that had one chapter wherein he discussed his philosophy of life.

He said something to the effect that religious belief was a waste of time and that a person's success was based solely on his own efforts and not on any supernatural intervention. (I don't know if he's still of this opinion now, but I was pleasantly surprised to read this at the time.)
