Anyway I sincerely and wholeheartedly apologize to those whose sensibilities I've offended, those who hold sacred the right to post written words where anybody can see them from anywhere with an internet connection but keep those same words private. Do I not have the right to walk down the street nude without people seeing my nakedness?

I have myself been outraged by the posts of some IIDB users in the nearly two years that I have been posting here. Many times the ethical stand point of users has conflicted with my own. I feel strongly about many of the issues we discuss here but none of those issues are more dear to my heart than the idea that we are free to conduct our lives based on our own ethical parameters.
Blue Metal was, in my opinion already suffering the consequence her foolish choices. The choice by Sakpo to exploit her even more foolish choice to post her misdeeds on this board demonstrated that he was using his own moral compass to judge her actions. Blue Metal was not a member of his academic peer group, he was not personally affected by the transgression, there was no risk of physical harm to any other person. It was not his business to start messing in. Of course...Sakpo is obligated to act on his own ethical foundations, not mine. I do not think that the IIDB ought to have a policy on this, but I do think that it is important for users to speak up if they think behaviour like Sakpo's is an abuse of our privacy. How would we view this if a Christian took it upon himself to track all of us down then had missionaries visit us because it was his heartfelt view that we were damaging ourselves and society by being non-believers? I wish that I could make this a more general statement, that I could speak of this event in theory. I apologise to Sakpo for seeming like I am coming down hard on him. I have always (and still do) respected his wisdom and maturity. |

I hope I don't sound like I'm attacking you, Jenna, but I fail to see how Sakpo has "exploited" Blue_Metal.

i didnt participate in any of the other threads. but as a member of this community, i feel obligated to respond now. i do not lie. maybe it is just cyberspace. and maybe other people get off on assuming some sort of false persona. but for me. honesty above all else, truth above all else. and blue metal lied to us, not once but repeatedly. she was testing out theories to use on her professor. sure its hearsay evidence, but evidence nontheless. i support sapko in his decision, i think he made the right one. and one that took guts. hell, it took even bigger balls to say that he did it.
in conclusion, any right of privacy blue metal had was voided by her lying to us this breach of trust was egregious. and as such i feel that sapko did the right thing. furthermore, i think that the right of privacy on a public bulletin board is very small. its like talking on a street corner and being overheard. |

Sakpo,
I personally, am not condemning you. I'm saying you shouldn't have done what you did. That is not a judgement about you as a person, but an opinion of mine from my ethical standpoint. As Jenna says, you made a value judgement about BlueMetal's actions and acted to negatively influence the outcome. Just as I would vehemently disagree with BM's conduct, I do the same with yours. If now, you are feeling condemned, then at least you know how she felt then. You did a brave thing to tell people it was you who acted, and you are not being punished for it (or at least I hope not).
