Rufus had a single after our freshman year. It's wonderful, I tell you--wonderful! Especially when I lived in the same dorm.

You're a lucky duck!

I've had a real single for 2 years now (one semester I ran out my roommate just by being my naturally odd self and paid the difference to keep from getting a new roommate). I love it...although it has practically turned me into a hermit. My room has a sink AND a toilet, so I only have to use the community bathroom for showering. I'm actually going to miss it when I graduate...

my bed in my current room is lofted - when I get my single next year I'm going to loft my bed again.

all the furniture in the dorms is movable, so I can lay out my room however I want

it's 9x16, though. That's the only catch - it's a funny little room. It's the only single in the dorm (aside from the RA rooms, that is)

Yeah, that's nice! I've been in a single most of my college existence and have doubled for a total of one year. Nothing beats some semblance of privacy at college, nothing.

The trick to living in a single is to economize space as much as you can. One of my singles had a lofty bed with a sofa underneath. There was no desk, but when I needed one, I went to a suitable study location, which was usually advantageous for the collaborative opportunities. If I had to purchase furniture, I'd look to Japan for ideas. They have nice fold up furniture that you can tuck away, such as a fold-up study table, put-away futon (the mattress thing, not the sofa), compact electronics and so on. They're masters at living in tiny, cramped quarters.

Nah, no need for a sock. Most dormroom occupants have one of those dry-erase boards on their doors. Just write "busy!" and sooner or later your roommate will get the point - it only takes one "oops, sorry!" moment to drive it home.
I used to write "killing a kitten, come back later" on the dryboard, until everyone else on the hall managed to find that picture (some months later).
