We can not make character judgements of God on a purely comparitive basis
On what basis then are you making your character judgement about god?

I try to use five different perspectives when determining truth....

1. The written word of God (the Bible)
2. The natural world
3. The writings of the church fathers throughout history
4. Personal experiences
5. The viewpoints of those who disagree with #1 and #3

These are the five things I try to consider when determining truth. So I would say ideally I am taking what I see in all five and concluding that the world is not inconsistant with the God described in the Bible.

Yes, science has got us out of the "Dark Ages", certainly, but at what price? I think I'd be much happier if I were living in the so-called Dark Ages than now. Then there was certainty, now only doubt all the time.
Some people prefer the certainty of knowing that they Know The Truth. Others are just as happy knowing that their knowledge is limited and imperfect, but that every day they can learn a little more about how the real world actually works.

I can see the attraction of certainty, but my dictionary says that "certain" and "accurate" actually have different meanings.

Still, it's amusing to see people who object to science use computers to spread the word.

Yeah, an uncaring, cruel bastard of a world where the innocent often suffer for no reason and the guilty often go unpunished. I agree, that is totally consistent with an OT god.
