Do a google search on U.S.S. Liberty and delve in. Quite interesting, actually.

Question

I'll have to say "I don't know", because I still need to learn more about the incident from both sides. I am currently reading this pro-Israeli account, with an anti-Israeli account to follow.

On another note:
  • What possible benefit could Israel gain by (a) deliberately attacking a warship which belongs to her most powerful ally, and (b) subsequently paying $13 million compensation?
  • What possible benefit would America gain by accepting the Israeli apology if indeed (as some claim) she knew full well that the Israelis were lying?

Personally, I think the answer is yes AND no.

I think there was a screw-up somewhere in the chain of command... Some officer gave an order to attack what he thought was an egyption ship. The people actually doing the attacking knew pretty quick that it was an american ship, but thought that if they'd been ordered to attack it, high command must have a reason, so kaboom kaboom. Afterward, israel was able to convince the us that they didn't MEAN it, twas an ACCIDENT, and with world affairs ebing as they were at that particular point in time, the decision was jointly made to cover the whole thing up to avoid even potentially harming the us-israel alliance.

It's a scenario that would seem to explain most of the known facts...

That makes sense, especially if the guys attacking discovered the identity at the last instant as they were making their attack run. If they had been given orders "Attack the ship at x, y" that didn't specifically identify it as Egyptian.

That's just the kind of thing that might happen. Were the aircraft making the attack in communication with their base realtime during the attack?

look what the American seamens write about this:
Note also what a Egyptian horse carrier El Quseir looks like:
http://ussliberty.org/
also
http://home.cfl.rr.com/gidusko/liberty/
and
http://www.logogo.net/liberty.htm
and also
http://www.washington-report.org/bac...93/9306019.htm

finally the extreem pro-israeli cite:
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/History/liberty.html

(Look at that site more clearly.
PM me if You find something about Camp David e.g. or someone can explain the 94% in http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/Peace/tabamap.html
Then we can open a new thread.
It has nothing to do with this thread, I just wanted to point out how much You can rely on this orthodox cite.)

Thank You
