Default Government to air FOX news in Iraq

Well, this is interesting. I'm sure that this will help to convince those poor heathen Iraqis that we are Knights in shining armour (crusaders, that is.) Glad to see my tax money put to such good use...

Westwood One has begun relaying two hours of live news in Iraq and plans to offer a lengthier program called "Iraq and the World" in conjunction with news networks, a company spokesman said. The U.S. government-funded show will provide uncensored, translated editions of the U.S. networks' nightly news broadcasts and programming from the Fox News Channel and Public Broadcasting Service, said Norm Pattiz, Westwood founder and chairman.

Ugh...that's freaking ridiculous. Why not use CNN again or an American news service that has more (any?) international credibility?

It seems pretty pointless to me. If the goal is to counteract "biased" Al-Jazera reporting, I see no way in hell that it will work. To begin with, people will naturally tend to lean towards reports from people who speak their language and live in the area. Who are the Iraqis more likely to believe in a dispute about Syria -- a Washington talking head, or somebody who has actually been to Syria and speaks the language?

Choosing Fox is just icing on the cake. People in the Arab world are not stupid; they realize that their media is sensationalist and biased. Countering that with media that is just as sensationalist and biased will have no effect.

Quote:

Al-Jazera: US Marines eat babies for lunch!
Fox: No they don't. Syrians eat babies for breakfast!

These statements do not cancel themselves out. The only way to cancel out inflammatory rhetoric is with a media that can be trusted to be unbiased. I'm afraid that showing something like Fox will just make things that much worse -- showing the Arab world graphically how much we misunderstand and hate them. They will have no way of realizing just how much we distrust Fox. (We do, don't we? We realize that it is entertainment rather than news, right?)

I think that they already get CNN in Arabic. Thinking about it makes me more mad...

How so? What about Iraq makes them favor the extreme?

One of the fedahyeen who ran away talked about his dream for the future. Paraphrasing because I don't have the quote handy, he wanted "a car, so maybe I could earn enough for an apartment and someday get a girl" Asked if that was all he wanted he said "Yup, that is it."

Another guy wanted to open a coffee shop (or was in the process of opening one when the war started.) Asked if he would welcome Americans, he said he would as long as they were paying customers...

Pretty extreme.

Default propoganda

This just add further proof to the common assertion that FOX is just another propaganda tool of the government. They are not even a proper media outlet; rather, they're a shamelessly over-sensationalized, second-rate, corporate-controlled, and a terribly biased excuse for a news source (and I use the term 'source' loosely)
