Hitler promised to make it all better for people that had nothing. Bush only promised to make things better for people that already have everything.

Or am I reading too much into this, and is this thread only started to outline (a few of) the circumstances leading to the rise of Nazism, and not to make a comparisson to contemporary US?
We've just come off an easy war victory that's made us a little too cocky. We have a great economy that's being wrecked by Bush eocnomic policies and deflation remains a threat. Bush has promised to make it all better for the elite that already have everything, since he knows all he needs to rally the peasants is a stage full of stars and stripes and a hearty "God Bless America!" I don't think the times are without interesting parallels myself.

Um...

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you here. I don't want to erect an unintentional straw-man, so I'll just ask...

If you don't mind, would you please explain just what you meant by this comment?

Heh-heh-heh. He said "erect!" Heh-heh-heh.

Yeah...huh-huh-huh. An erect straw man. It's like a really scary scarecrow.

Yeah! It's like, "Hey crows, I got something for you!" heh-heh-heh

Q: What's the difference between Bush and Hitler?

A: Hitler was elected.

Actually, they were both elected. But coincidentally enough, they were both elected into power by a minority. What happened to the majority is as good a question then as it is now.

I don't think Hitler was *strictly* elected. IIRC he was appointed chancellor after Hindenburg was elected president. I don't remember the details though... (However I suppose it can be said that Hitler achieved his initial position as chancellor via the "legitimate" workings of a democracy.)

So was Clinton. 43% if I recall. Blame Nader.

The Bush election was most fascinating in that people learned en masse that we operate under an electoral college system. Based on the reaction, one would have thought the EC system was put in place days before the election just to get Bush in office.

As for the nonsense that he wasn't elected (the post you address) it's sour grapes. The same cloud of doubt would have hung over Gore had he won the court cases.

Did anyone bother to read the piece in the link? It's a great article and story on it's own...even if you aren't looking to try to connect it with the uber patriots and current US government. I'm interested in getting the book.
