Just be glad that the writer that inspired the event didn't call it "The Asshole of America".

I wish some journalist would refer to Austin as "The Tits of America."

Believe it or not, a similar event actually happened. Allan Sherman describes it in his book, The Rape of the A*P*E* (American Puritan Ethic): The Official History of the Sex Revolution 1945-1973:

As late as 1943 I visited the Ozark town of De Soto, Missouri (population 5129) and beheld a peculiar spectacle. Along the entire one-mile length of Main Street, every store had stacks of both Kotex and Modess boxes in the front window. Not just the drugstore, mind you, but the barbershop, the soda fountain, the local movie house, the hardware store, the town saloon, the public library and the YMCA. It was a mind-blowing thing to see. I was sure I had arrived in the middle of some bloody hillbilly Menstruation Festival. Later someone explained: All the town's merchants were cooperating to teach local ladies to use sanitary napkins, which they still regarded (in 1943) as an invention of the devil and a sin against nature.
