I would suggest getting hold of a copy of The Origins of Virtue by Matt Ridley. It draws on the Axelrod's research into The Prisoner's Dilemma and evolutionarily stable strategies (the notion that some modes of behaviour are going to confer a reproductive advantage). Ridley's book is highly readable, and aimed at the layman. Should give you some ammo for the next round

I'll remember this the next time a fundy tries to tell me that the beautiful trees prove that there is a designer/god.
