Default Camp Quest for secular kids

ANNOUNCING CAMP QUEST 2003

It's Beyond Belief!

Camp Quest, the secular summer camp, is now accepting registrations from prospective campers, and applications for unpaid staff positions, for Camp Quest 2003. This will be our 8th consecutive year of operation. Camp Quest is the first residential summer camp in the history of the United States for the children of atheists, secular humanists, humanists, freethinkers, etc.

Camp Quest was started by the Free Inquiry Group, Inc. (FIG) of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, and has been operated continuously by FIG since 1996. With the blessings (pardon us--approval) of FIG, in 2002, Camp Quest, Inc. became an independent national humanist organization in its own right, with a board of directors drawn from several different national freethought organizations. Most of the board members have worked as staff at Camp Quest.

This year we return to the our wonderful new location obtained in 2002-YMCA Camp Campbell Gard, near Overpeck, Ohio. The dates are June 21st to June 28th, 2003. Staff arrive June 20th.

The new Camp Quest-Camp Quest of the Smoky Mountains-had a fine first year in 2002. It is near Knoxville, Tennessee, in the Smoky Mountain National Forest, and it is fully approved by Camp Quest. This is the first of a number of Camp Quests we hope to set up across the United States. It is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS). Other new Camp Quests are in the works. The dates for the second year of Camp Quest of the Smoky Mountains are June 1st to June 8th, 2003.

And some breaking news. There is now Camp Quest of Michigan. Fully approved by Camp Quest, it is ready to start its first year. The dates are August 2nd to August 9th, 2003. Camp Quest of Michigan will be held at the beautiful Sherman Lake YMCA Center.

Yes, you can attend any or all of these camps. Each will be similar and each will be different.

The fee for each camp is $550 for one camper, and $500 for each additional sibling from the same family unit. Ages are 8 to 17 for campers. Minimum age for unpaid staff is 18.

Apply early to avoid disappointment for a camp experience that combines reason, science, and critical inquiry with traditional camp things like swimming, crafts, nature study, and camp food.

The two invisible unicorns are still there-with a prize, as yet unclaimed, of a godless $100 bill for any camper who can prove they aren't there. Are they at the new camps as well? Better ask, or, better yet, come find out.

Here is contact information on this truly unique experience:

Camp Quest has the dubious honor of being the source of a bill to allow religious discrimination (against Camp Quest) . The story is here .

Man, I wish I hadn't already taken both my vacations this year! Is it really only March?! My birthday falls during that week, and that would be so much fun! I was a camp councellor for Boys & Girls club ages ago, and it was a blast.

Thanks for the info.

I hope that when I get kids, that there'd be a similar camp in the Philippines. I can't wait to raise my own second-generation freethinkers.

Where you live is immaterial, other than cost of travel.

My friend's kids loved the place.

Some members of the New Jersey Humanist Network send their kids or grandkids to Camp Quest every year. NJHN's May meeting focused on "Raising Humanist Children" and Camp Quest was discussed at some length, including a Q&A with two of the campers.

Ed Kagin is an amazing man, fighting incredible opposition in the Northern Kentucky/Southwestern Ohio region, all for the benefit of teaching kids to think critically. He gave a powerful speech at the Godless Americans March on Washington back in November. So powerful to me that I was determined to start supporting Camp Quest financially and encouraging fellow atheists/humanists to do the same. NJHN will soon consider a Camp Quest sponsorship in our annual fundraising efforts. This is what Ed asks of us. It's the least we can do in return.

As of this date and time, the website at www.camp-quest.com is working for me.
