a few weeks ago I had to take the "PLAN" test ( a way of them telling you what professions you already know you don't want to do ) and one of the questions is "what religon do you belong to?" I filled in the scantron bubble for " I choose not to answer this question" because "Atheist " wasn't an answer. Oh well.

Hoo-boy they do. Way back when I took the PSAT, which is put together by the College Board (a for-profit privately held company in the standardized testing biz), I was still identified as Presbyterian, and marked accordingly. I actually got mail from some school in the hinterlands of Wes-gan-sin or Minn-eh-soda that said "If you were a member of an E.L.C.A. (that's Evangellical Lutheran Church in America) congregation you'd be elligible for "insert amount here" in scholarships".

I remember taking the test several years ago and running into the same problem. But I also seem to remember that once I started to heat up, I found a box for "No Religion." Are you sure that wasn't on there? It was quite easy to miss; I think I had to recheck everything two or three times before I noticed it.

Also, do the PSATs vary from state to state? I thought it was a national test.

Brace yourself. If you do well they'll all pelt you with information. At least they did in 1983. Of course, I don't remember how I answered the religion question, or even for sure if there was one back then. If there was, I almost certainly picked the "I won't disclose" blob, b/c "none of your business" was pretty much my standard response back then in any question of opinion. I'd been burned a few times about atheism years before, and learned that lesson, unfortunately, well.

When I took one of those stupid tests a few years ago (don't know if it was the PSAT or the SAT or ACT or ASVAB or one of those other acronyms...) there definitely was a spot for "Buddhist," because I accidentally marked it instead of "I don't want to disclose," and had to think quickly to explain it to my parents when the scores came back. Not that they probably would have gotten angry if I'd said I was Buddhist...less upset than declaring atheism, I bet...but it still was a horribly awkward moment.

And the Catholic universities still sent me junk.

And the Mennonite colleges still figured out that I was a preacher's kid, and they still sent me extra junk. Yeah, right, I want to go where half my fundie high school is going so that I can spend another four years with those pricks, feeling isolated and rejected. Mm-hm. Goshen College, here I come.
