This is exactly what my first philosophy professor said many years ago. He used creationism as his straw man example.

He said, "If you are going into politics, I want you to learn all of these fallacies so that you can use them."
Class laughs hysterically.

You will note that neither Atheists nor Theists state that the Apostles made up the Gospel. No educated Christian would suggest such a thing. Note too that the Apostles are characters in the same story. It's like asking if Sirius would give up his life so willingly if he knew for a fact that there was no real Harry Potter.
