If Bush I really said it, I think it is relevant. He is a recent former president who impugned the patriotism and integrity of millions of people he was supposed to be serving.

And whether he said it or not, he was given a chance to respond to the quote, FWIU, and he did not. He could have said "Of course I would never say that" or someting to that effect and he never has.

As far as "not insulting atheism" --- every time a politician starts rattling off religions such as "every person of faith" knows something is wrong or something should be done and they don't include people of non-faith, Atheists have not been included, and therefore, IMO, insulted.
