So publicly disagreeing with the mods is grounds for being banned.

Makes me appreciate II that much more.

Andrew Dickson White discussed this question in his <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/andrew_white/Andrew_White.html" target="_blank">History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896)</a>, under 'Chapter XI: From "The Prince of the Power of the Air" To Meteorology'. Especially the last part on the invention of the lightning rod.

It was long thought that ringing church bells would repel lightning; in fact, some bells would have "fulgura frango" ("I break the lightning" in Latin) on them. But though several webpages refer to this, I haven't found one that has a big collection of church-bell inscriptions. But ADW mentions that some bells were, in fact, baptized for this duty.

However, ringing church bells in thunderstorms would often result in the bell-ringers getting killed by ... lightning. And despite the deaths and church-tower lightning damage, the various church authorities would often take several years before deciding to use a lightning rod on their structures.

A curio in this context:

Schiller's famous "Die Glocke" (The Bell) is a long poem that all German-speaking children have to read in grade school. It's motto is taken from a church-bell in Schiller's home town:

"Vivos voco. Mortuos plango. Fulgura frango"

(I call the living. I mourn the dead. I break the lightning).

I once lived close to a noisy churchtower and added the following lines:

"Dormientes irrito. Somnum interrupo"

(I disturb the sleepers. I interrupt sleep")

On <a href="http://www.christianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=5fbe6a3f1ae741a92feb3ed329931d2f& threadid=10296&perpage=10&display=&pagenumber=7" target="_blank">this</a> thread, God Fixation, whom I think is a misguided young lady, plagariazed Hovind's Evolutionist "stumpers."

Would someone with an account on that forum post the following link to answer her?

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Temple/9917/evolution/hovind_questions.html" target="_blank">Mr. Hovind's Questions for Evolutionists</a>

I would hate to see people waste their time having to explain Hovind's crap to her.
