Red face News: Dean supporters are "Secular Warriors" (Wall Street Journal)

OK, who let the cat out of the bag! Man doesn't anyone know about a stealth campaign? hehehe

Oh well. Bring on the Falwell and Robertson attacks.

Wait a minute, those guys don't read the Wall Street Journal.......

Anyway, here is the quote
Quote:
The Wall Street Journal 's Al Hunt writes about the rarified air breathed by "early upper-tier insurgent" Howard Dean.An insurgent vaulting into the limelight this early is both an opportunity and a danger for both Dean and the Democratic Party, Hunt writes. "The Dean base largely is what pollster Stan Greenberg calls the "secular warriors" - largely white, middle- to upper-middle class, non-church going, non gun-owning voters." A.K.A., the same voters Senator John Kerry is seeking to do battle over.

I'd have to say Greenberg's categorizing of the Dean supporters is way off.
The people at our meetups consist of carpenter, firefighter, neurologist, stay at home moms, retirees, nurses, teachers, unemployed, lots of college students (undergrad & grad), an economics professor, advertiser, bar owner, cafe owner, photographer, journalist, basically people of all walks of life.

We get a LOT of Greens at our meetings too.

I find it ironic how the same MEDIA that incorrectly stereotype all
Dean supporters as "Anti-War" would then turn around and call us "WARRIORS" . LOL.

They are thinking of anything they can to turn people away but its obviously not working.

Secular warrior? Does that mean he's going to battle against the religious reich? Gosh, I hope so.

I signed up for the Dean meetup, but I haven't managed to make myself go yet. Political activism is kind of new to me.

Dean's first cousins are running his campaign in SLC, so since they know him personally I asked if he is religious. He's not. He was raised protestant of some kind, his wife is Jewish, they didn't raise their kids religious. But he's not a secular warrior either. I LOVE that about him because he'll be hard to attack on religion. He's not against it, he not for it, he just doesn't give a crap, which is the way it ought to be.

You do realize that this will be painted as a negative in the campaign. Not as bad as if he was a card-carrying atheist, but he'll still be attacked for it.

Though I don't think the Reps will pick up too many votes that way. Most of the people that will matter to will already vote for Bush, anyway.

I posted this back in January.

Fortunately, I quoted the article in the post since the link has since been updated. I don't think Dr. Dean's stand on religion will hurt him any. As has already been said, those who would be bothered by it aren't going to vote for him anyway.

I'm not so sure this will negatively affect him. His signing of the Civil Unions bill in Vermont has already alienated him from the Religious Right. There are many in the US, both nonreligious heathens like us and liberal religionists, that are disturbed by Bush's marriage to religious extremism. I think he'll keep his religious views private.

Dean's religion is listed as "Congregationalist", which, to the best of my knowledge and research, is a pretty mainstream, private New England form of Protestantism. We had another President with this religion: Calvin Coolidge. Known as "Silent Cal", he kept many things to himself including religion.

There's an old anecdote of an encounter he and his wife had after he returned from Sunday services. Mrs. Coolidge asked him what the sermon was about.

"Sin", Calvin briefly replied.

"Well, what did he say about it?"

"He was against it," was Calvin's only reply.

Oh, how I wish our current President was like that with his religion, rather than trying to impose it on the rest of us through faith-based initiatives, John Ashcroft, vouchers, etc.

THOUGHTfully yours,
Clark

It's not so much a card, but a chip, and it was implanted in you when you didn't know it.

The news is spreading.....

From today's Humanist Network News e-newsletter:
Quote:
Is Howard Dean a Humanist?

Howard Dean's Lack of Faith
As spotted on an Internet Infidels (Secular Web) forum:

"An atheist woman I know on the II boards, who lives in Utah and is active with the [Howard Dean for president] campaign, posted the following:

'Dean's first cousins are running his campaign in [Salt Lake City], so since they know him personally I asked if he is religious. He's not. He was raised Protestant of some kind, his wife is Jewish, they didn't raise their kids religious. But he's not a secular warrior either.
