Default Help with Linux Mandrake

I was wondering if anyone here knows how to configure a modem in Mandrake. I'm a newbie at Linux and I just recently installed Mandrake. I went into KDE and used kppp. When I try to connect to my ISP, the modem is activated, it rings, and it starts to make noise (like usual). At the end of the noise something strange happens. Instead of checking my password and giving me acess to the Internet, there's a lot of line noise and then the modem redials. Each time it redials the same thing happens.

I'm using a Best Data 56k external modem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have kppp configured for the correct modem type and speed?

Does kppp allow you to configure things like duplex, parity bits, stop bits? The standard config is half/none/one. (Er, I think I have those right.)

I'm a little confused because you say "at the end of the noise" there is "a lot of line noise." Does this mean it is in fact connecting? If so perhaps you need to configure the 'handshake' or whatever you call it. There is an option in kppp to set this up; you tell it what to expect (i.e., 'ogin:', 'assword:') and what to provide (your username and password). If you are connecting but then idling until the ISP boots you, this is probably the issue.

Thanks for your response mac_philo. With the advice you gave me (and a whole bunch of playing around with the system ), I managed to figure it out.
