Default A bit of self-introduction

Greetings, everyone.
I've actually been posting for the last couple days now, but I sort of just discovered the goodness that is the Lounge, so I figured some introductions might be in order. First of all, I am, of course, Non Homogenized, though I am sometimes known as Dave (usually irl). I'm a science major (general option) at PSU, where I'm a second year freshman (I changed majors at the beginning of the semester). I'm a young'un, at 19, and I have unfortunately little formal training in the sciences. I've picked up a fair bit on my own, but not even a fraction of what I'd like. Which, I suppose, is why I'm a science major. Hopefully I'll learn some more in the next few years .
I've oft been accused of being a know-it-all, or someone who refuses to ever admit that they might be wrong, which is somewhat puzzling to me, as I oft admit exactly that, and only avoid having to admit to actually being wrong far more than I do, by learning through hard experience when to keep my stupid mouth shut. Even so, I tend to suffer from foot-in-mouth, so when I come across as arrogant, or a complete jerk, chances are I didn't mean whatever I said the way it seemed I did, or I was typing without thinking... again.
I try to balance this with self-deprecating humor, since it keeps the ol' ego in check, and because it's the kind of humor I'm best at (after all, I'm really familiar with the material...), although I'm also known to insult and mock ... well, pretty much anything that seems like a good idea at the time, or even just anything that looks like it might be entertaining to do so. Hopefully, I'll do a decent job of making the distinction between when I'm jesting, and when I'm completely serious, but it's not something I'm particularly well known for.
Well, I suppose that I've done enough talking about myself by now, and, if anyone really cared to learn more, there's plenty of contact info on my profile (pretty much any way you care to contact me, it's possible). If anyone wishes to introduce themselves via the forum, instant messenging services, or whatever, I'd be glad to make your acquaintance (or, if I wouldn't, I'll at least be pleased to make it until I realize that I'm not.)

Hey -- where's Silent Dave, anyway --

Welcome, Dave, to our (not so) little community of reason.

IRT your first and last comments, thank you, thank you, and I'm sure I will.

As for a story behind my username, I suppose that there is, although something of a mundane one.

Back in the mists of time (1996 or 1997, as I recall ), when I first downloaded Aol Instant Messenger, I was trying to come up with a username. To make a long story short, I was drinking a glass of milk, I noticed the "Vitamin A + D, Pasturized, Homogenized" on the carton, and it occured to me that most people I met seemed, to me, as if they were homogenized (Since they were so homogeneous, and all). Since I've always been considered, at the least, to be decidedly odd, and I've always noticed how little I have in common with most of the people I meet, it seemed fitting. Plus, I found the mental image of homogenized people amusing, and, based on that distinction, non homogenized ones to be equally entertaining. Now it's a part of my self-identity, I suppose, so I'm comfortable with it as a nickname.

Thank you. As a matter of fact, when I was first reading the forum, of the first posts I read was by you, and I chuckled when I saw your user name. One of those phrases that never gets old.
