25% for me, although it works out like this:

0-38000 pa: 19.8%
38000-60000 pa: 33% (earnings above 38000 only)
60000 pa: 39% (earnings above 60000 only)

We also have a 12.5% sales tax on all goods and services, heavy taxes on fuel, alcohol, cigarettes etc.

On the other hand, we have free (supposedly!) education until university, 80%-ish subsidised university, free hospital care for accident and non-elective surgery etc, nationwide accident coverage etc.

On the whole, it's not too bad.

We also don't have to file a tax return if we don't want to, barring things like student loans etc.

I guess that would be fine if everyone was able to handle their money responsibly. *Looks at some fellow citizens* I'm not convinced that everyone is that responsible.

I'm paying about 26% payroll tax, around 20% income tax and the rest National Insurance. That's on a wage just over 1.5x the national average. I can't remember what my local council tax is. And I contribute quite a lot to the exchequer through the purchase of alcohol.

I think I should be paying more tax.

A Libertarian pipe dream that has no basis in reality.

You use to only pay once a year in a lump sum. I explained the US tax history in this thread here.

The pupose of taking estimated taxes out of your paycheck was to extract more money from the tax payers with less complaints. It seems to have worked.

Exactly my point.

It's already unfair. When you use force to confiscate private property, you erode the concept of private property, period. There is no "fair" in the use of force on individuals.
