Well the obvious antidote to the Beamer book would be The Autobiography of Malcolm X, I also think there's a bio of M. Murray O'hair around someplace.

Well why not just say Muslims? I know Christian and atheist Arabs.

Sakpo, point taken - I specified Muslim Arabs in my post but I really meant just Muslims.

Malcolm X will be a good choice.

What about "The First Man" by Albert Camus? It is his unfinished autobiographical novel, and it touches many aspects of his own life.

You know, the minute I read the OP, I thought of Malcolm X.

That's who gets my vote, unless you wisely decide to drop the course.

I'm sorry Sakpo, I should have been a little more clear in my second post. I too meant "Muslim Arabs" when I said "Arabs" which kind of buried all Arabs under my sweeping stereotype. All Arabs are not immediately Muslims by default; I should have not made such a generalisation.

I find it very interesting that Lisa Beamer says she's glad her husband died, because he was a True Believer. She said in an interview that having a True Believer die was much more preferable to having a non-believer die, simply because God could have more time to work in that non-believer's life. This 30-second TV tidbit was enough to make me not want to buy her book, nor waste my time reading it for a class.

Is the Malcom X book the one written by Alex Haley, of Roots fame? Or is there another?

I have told my professor I downright refuse to purchase this book and support this golddigging, sacchrine-sweet Christian woman. I also told her I refuse to borrow it from the library to read it.

Well, she somewhat sarcastically said I could read any book that was a biography about a great leader, and that outlined his/her leadership qualities at a "post-secondary" level (as if Lisa Beamer's book is post-secondary, LOL). I need recommendations - my professor's recommendation was Oprah Winfrey's autobiography. I don't think so.

Any suggestions?
(Tongue firmly in cheek) How about "She Said Yes: The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall" ?

Keep the suggestions coming - I just got an email that said I needed to prepare TWO essays on TWO books, since neither of her mighty tomes interested me .
