There are many odd things in the Bible. Forsaking earthly pleasures is one of them -----------which I don't think anybody halfway sane at any time in history (except for the very early Christians) ---and certainly not in modern day materialistic times---really does
So, Rational BAC, what about the Charterhouse Nuns and Monks linked to by Gemma? Are you calling them insane?

And how about viewing (just for a second, if that is all you can manage ) the Sermon on the Mount as a passage put in by a heartless ruler trying to keep his poor, downtrodden masses poor and downtrodden. "The meek shall inherit the earth". Yeah, right!

My reply is in regard to the original question posed by the subject: Can a christian ever totally divorce himself from society?

I once met a young homeless man, quite happy with his life, who lived entirely on the good will of others. He simply travelled and spread the gospel, which is how I met him. So my answer is "yes", it is possible.
