Hey Lady - that can't be it!!!! Maybe it's sorta regional? Obviously L.A. (area) is drenched in the hip-hop culture right now so maybe that's why...

its supposed to mean that large gold jewellry popular in that particular subculture but i find its generally used in reference to money and less commonly sex. In all, its just representative of an item of worth.
The word themselves i can only imagine are emulated the sound of a cash register or something... |

As stated above it originally came from the Hip Hop culture meaning flashy jewlery.
It has further evolved in some other sub cultures to mean something gawdy to attract attention. For example in the ricer comunity you have the bling bling if your car has a triple decker bookself spooler, NOS stickers, and coffee can muffler. In the computer case mod community you have the bling bling if your computer has enough fans for lift off with blinking LEDs and neon lights. |

Makes sense to me. I thought it had come to mean anything flashy or "for show". And I assumed "bling" referred to the glare or reflection, not for the sound.

Why is Huey Lewis' "Hip to be Square" running through my head?
My manager's fondness for rap is the only reason I knew what the hell bling-bling meant. Don't feel bad at all. |
