I spent the first 20 years of my life trying to be a "good girl," which means no swearing at all. When I turned heathen, I started to pick up swear words and found that using them came very naturally to me. I now swear generously and like to think of it as therapeutic (I no longer "follow the rules"), as well as making up for lost time.

Jesus fucking Christ is one of my favorite expressions. I don't say it around my 77 year old Baptist mom or any of my patients though. Almost all of my nurse peers swear, even the good Xians.

I personally believe that the harsh consonant sounds like s,t,f,k are satisfying to use when one feels stressed. However if used too often they tend to lose their value and sound pretty dull.

People who swear are just trying to sound "cool" or "manly". Always.

I wouldn't say "always"...though it can seem that way sometimes.

Yeah, if not for the fact that 'bastard' is on the list of things he is allowed to say in front of me. Hell, it's practically his NAME.

We actually do have a 'list' of words he can say in front of me and those he can't. I don't care at all if he swears, so long as he can confine it to appropriate situations.

Sometimes, though, his friends will hear us say something like 'ass' or 'bastard' and think all swearing's OK in front of me. Once, one of his friends slipped up and said shit or something when I was there, and my son looked at me, with his lower lip trembling, and yelled, "MOMMY! He said a bad word, and it hurt my self-esteem!"

You could just see the shock on the kid's face before it dawned on him that it was a joke. I mean, they were probably 15 at the time.

So, when I swear where no-one else can here(something I do a lot of), I'm trying to sound "cool" or "manly"?

If a dirty word falls in the woods with no one to hear it, does it make a sound...?

You're probably just trying to convince yourself.

Plus, if you swear hard enough, you can become Fonzie.

AAAY!
