I personally think that if you have to put in an effort to be humble you are simply trying to fool the people around you to think about you as a humble man/woman.
Humility comes from not thinking you are superior than your fellow man but also not setting yourself short next to them.

Humility may be the ability to place others above oneself. Also the ability to set aside one's ego. To accept correction and guidances. It is a challenge no matter what. Our ego tells us to reaffirm ourselves instead of seeking to grow. Humility is a constant growth as we realize that our persona will always fluctuate with the circumstances of life.
In terms of religion, humility ought to be the realization that noone detains the absolute truth. And to act accordingly.
