I'd tell him I'd be more than happy to read it as long as he would read my critique of it. Or perhaps he could also read a book of your choosing. I do not think that would be too much to ask. Respect and tolerance go both ways. He needs to realize this.

I understand you do not want an even wider rift between you and your brother. If he wants you to accept him he needs to also accept you. I have 5 siblings and, unfortunately, religion has made relations quite tense at times, but for all but one sibling it is usually minor misunderstandings blown out of proportion.

I think things will likely calm down, given time. As far as what to do with the book...

Toss that book in the garbage can.

I had the opportunity to see Josh McDowell speak (this was when I was a Christian) and even I, in my fundie-ness, was appalled. McDowell believes that God instilled a built-in "I have a desire to know God" chip in each person at birth. Therefore it is a person's choice not to seek out the Truth.

Silly, all atheists have no morals. Aren't you a member of the EAC?

Did you get the memo?

I've decided my plan with this book will be to read it for amusement sake if I'm ever bored, but otherwise ignore it. I haven't decided yet if I will say anything to my brother about the book a la "hey thanks for the thought but this book says I'm angry at God after I just explained to you how that was the worst misconception about atheists, so it's somewhat offensive to me" but for now I'm just going to ignore the thing and only bring it up if he asks about it. I really must reply in some way to his last email (an apology at least for the misunderstanding).

Well, it was my birthday on the 22nd. So yesterday I got a package in the mail with some birthday gifts from my brother. A CD, a DVD, and, oh yeah! "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.
Maybe you could print out a copy of The Jury Is In and give it to him along with copy of Contact on DVD.

I don't even know what to say about this. I'd send him the Onion Collection that's out now. I just ordered it.
