And what about my sister and I? I'm a strong atheist and she is a raving fundie. How does that fit into the equation since we had the same father and upbringing?

Both my sisters are fundies, and my mom is one as well. I'm not.
I'm very close to my dad, and he's a christian, though of a more liberal sort. Maybe people don't believe in god because they thought it through and came to that conclusion? |

My dad's a martial artist, a sucessful entrepeneur and a hard-edge neo-orthodox Roman Catholic.
Oh yea, he's not a real christian and so is a weak father. No true scotsmen raise atheists. |

My dad didn't fit any of those criteria, either. 'Course, I suppose a fundy would consider any father who demanded that his children not be bombarded with religious propaganda until they were mature enough to critically consider the claims and make their own decisions...as abusive, right? And he also required that my mother NEVER play hymns on the piano while he was in earshot....abusive, right?
Anyway, I'd say it was my mother that had the biggest influence. She was fairly evangelical as well as chronically and severely manic/depressive. When you see your mother give up her medications because she believes that her faith will ameliorate her psychological conditions...again...and again...and again...It kinda tilts the playing field toward some more rational alternative. godfry |

inflatable party-doll of a Dad
Frankly I don't think that those of us who have had a perfectly adequate normal loving Dad would be those who feel compelled to need an imaginary friend sort of Dad. That need would be fulfilled by your human father

That doesn't even make any sense. Whoever came up with that obviously didn't do their homework. My mom was raised in an at least partially abusive household and that's exactly why she's religious. My Dad's never been abusive, nor weak, he isn't dead since I'm still young, and he's here, he's in the crapper right now.

The record of father's worldwide isn't that spectacular. If his assertions were true, we'd all be atheists.
