I recently read the latest biography of Martin Luther, by Martin Marty. It left me with only one question. Why did Marty bother to write it? It contains absolutely no new research. While Marty admits that Luther was not at all times the nicest person in the world, that's about as far as he goes.
I had thought that Marty was a somewhat enlightened and liberal Lutheran. I guess I was wrong. He glosses over the slaughter of the peasants, the witch burnings and Luther's obscene anti-semitism with only the merest acknowlegment. I'm sure he will unload a substantial first printing on the Lutheran seminaries and churches and reap a nice profit. I thought better of him. The Admiral |
