I'm a big fan of games like Risk and Axis & Allies, but I also like some of the simpler, odd-ball games that can be played in less than three hours. I've had a lot of fun with a game called Titan: I Can't Remember the Rest. It's ultra-geeky, but my friends aren't the type to care much about that.

Titan! Holy Beelzebub, I remember that! Didn't it have mythical creatures and you moved around the board into the center and they could battle and what not?
Anyone remember Dark Tower? |

Scrabble
Monopoly Trivial Pursuit Taboo I like Risk, but it can get tedious sometimes. Anyone remember Bonkers? I used to have hours and hours of fun playing that game. It's a pretty ingenious concept, allowing you to reinvent the game every time you play. Of course, I'm a little old for it now... |

Oddly enough, that's NOT the Titan I'm thinking of. At all. The game I play doesn't even have a board, just a bunch of cards. Players bid on different beasties and try to make them survive through several rounds by giving them good cards from their own hand. Bids on critters that survive get cashed in after 4 rounds (the weakest critter dying each round); the earlier you bet on that critter, the more the bet is worth. Play through three times, add up your scores. Not at ALL what you guys seem to be talking about.

Elwood is referring to Titan: The Arena a non-collectable card game inspired by the original board game. The board game has its good points but it has a fatal flaw: it is hellishly long and it is a fair accompli that one or more players will be eliminated long before it is over (unless played with just two).
I like Titan as a two-player geek game, but that flaw can not be overcome. A short list of board games favored by 9 out of 10 Bookmen: Classic Games: Chess Go Best in class: Scrabble Party Games: Pictionary Scattergories Balderdash Best in Class: Apples to Apples Recent Boardgames: Carcassonne Settlers/Seafarers/Cities and Knights of Catan Best in Class: Tigris and Euprhates There are more. I'm a bit of a board game geek. Bookman |

Trivial Pursuit
Pictionary Gestures Taboo Scattergories Mousetrap - but I never actually tried to play the game, just put the thing together and set it off. Edited to add: backgammon, forgot about that one. It's about the only "classic" game I like. |

My young kids of 7&8 are addicted to a simple game called Sequence, where cards are used to play five-in-a-row.
Another board game we like a lot is Clue. I'd like to teach them Masterpiece, but I can't find it anywhere. Vorkosigan |
