Read his descriptions of Russian peasants/peasant life, then read some history about Russian peasants, then read Chekhov's "The Peasants." Then evaluate who was a more honest writer.

Off the top of my head (so this isn't comprehensive by any means, I'll invariably omit many favourites):

Chinua Achebe
Isabel Allended
Ralph Ellison
Milorad Pavich
Toni Morrison
Alejo Carpentier
Mark Twain
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
William Faulkner
John Steinbeck
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Fyodor Dostoevsky
J.D. Salinger
Stephen Crane
Dalton Trumbo
Timothy Findley

My favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut, with a close second in James Joyce.

For "cotton candy" books, I enjoy Pratchett the most, although for pure raw infantile humor I prefer Piers Anthony (puns > all).

Given that the question is not best, but merely favourite, I must be another vote for Douglas Adams. There are many writers with superior mastry of their craft, but no-one matches D.N.A. for plain old enjoyability and intriguing turns of phrase.

My favourite:

"They hung in the sky in exactly the same way that bricks don't"

I can't pick one favourite. Here's a short list, though, with many omissions:

William Faulkner
Joseph Conrad
Miroslav Krleza
Thomas Mann
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Stanislaw Lem

Good popular science writers:

Richard Dawkins
John McPhee

For fiction:

The best writer im reading right now is Italo Calvino. Brillant and daring author.

my favorites are probably something like Orwell, Ralph Ellison, Faulkner, Kafka, Kurt Vonnegurt, Dosteovesky, Camus and I might just half to say Chuck P.
