Are you sure there's no "light" down there? Infrared radiation should be plentiful. A warm tunnel is approximately a blackbody with a peak in the infrared.

But if the whole place is at thermal and chemical equilibrium, there is no way for anything to metabolize and grow and reproduce, because doing so requires some sort of thermodynamic disequilibrium.
