That's too bad seebs...but then again, unemployment isn't all that bad. Don't forget to file for benefits. You might look at the job postings at colleges near you...

I don't know when unemployment would kick in - my guess is, not until after the severance pay runs out. But yeah, I'll be looking into it.

College job boards are unlikely to have many jobs that I would be a good match for, but I can always try it. I'm mostly not an entry-level guy anymore.

Gee, seebs, I feel for you -- I just found out today my contract is ending (very unexpectedly) March 1. I've only been at this job for a little over a year, and I'm having flashbacks to the horrible time I had as an unemployed person before I got it. I'm not a happy camper!

Here's the "General Requirements Bulletin for Admission to the Examination for Registration to Practice in Patent Cases Before the United States Patent and Trademark Office" for the Spring 2003 exam. They give two exams a year, and the requirements may change, but that should give you an idea of what you might have to do if you wish to qualify.

Familiar sound. After a large number of years, my spouse got laid off from HP in November. The next spring I got laid off after 27 years in Bell Labs and AT&T Labs - Research. We both got decent severence and I retired instead of "just leaving", but still, it stinks.

I'm re-employed, it is a shock after 27 years in the same environment. Still, I'm now on my second employer since gas station summer jobs.

Sorry to hear the news Seebs. My thoughts are with you

I work for an online marketing agency here in the Seattle area. We're just getting by, but we're still here!

I just started work Jan 6 after almost a year unemployed. I do programming too. So sorry to hear you've been affected.

File unemployment ASAP since there is usually a lag time from registering to qualifying for payments.

Check out the library, some will have career resources and maybe even career centers. My local library (Cugahoga County) has 5 staff members dedicated to job searching. It was a major help to me and it was all free.

Good luck!

I'm very sorry to hear of your job loss and wish you much success in finding a new one quickly. How is your wife taking the bad news? I've been in her situation and it's pretty tough on the spouse too. I hope she will be very supportive of you during this difficult time.

Your right about the unemployment benefits, but you can go ahead and apply now so you'll start getting your checks without a delay.

Oh seebs that sucks. At least you got a severence package...many don't

We had our first round of layoffs yesterday (and already had a skeleton crew)...I had to lay off my sister-in-law. The big bosses keep mentioning closing our office and bringing the few of us left to L.A. (which I HATE). I feel like shit
