Yes, Christianity makes more sense if you envision God as a sort of omnipotent playwright trying to construct an interesting scenario to entertain himself (or perhaps an audience of fellow gods?). If this is the case, human happiness is apparently rather low on his list of priorities. Just as Shakespeare didn't care a whit whether Hamlet was happy or not.
