I told my mother, who sent it to me, that it was racist and I found it offensive. She said that we each have our own opinion and neither is wrong.....I'm sorry, I think her opinion is WRONG!

You know, I hear this tripe a lot. I think it stems from a common misconception -- that because everybody is entitled to have an opinion, that means everybody's opinion is therefore correct, or at least of equal value (as your mother seems to believe.) Codswallop. Some opinons are wrong, and the one that spawned this revolting doggerel is wronger than most.

The insulting patois? The egregious misrepresentation of life on welfare? That "white man race" line? Good grief. No.

WHAT.THE.FUCK! Offensive is mild...that is obscene.

And in what state can somebody get rich on a welfare check?? Our unemployment is capped at 1200.00/month and welfare can't pay much more than that!!

There is an aesthetic question, about which it is hard to say what is "right", although I think that's pretty awful from such a standpoint.

However, once we get into moral or factual questions, we can start talking about "right". Moral questions are hard ones to be sure of, but most people seem to grant that, even if the answers are hard to discern, they are sometimes out there.

I would like to go on the record as saying that the "poem" is essentially an ignorant, bigoted, hateful... Hmm. I will run out of words here.

It is wrong. The very laws of physics would cry out against it, had they a voice.

(As it happens, I think they sort of do.)

I'm guessing your mother is a professing Christian. I'd suggest you point her at the book of Ruth, and at the parable of the Good Samaritan, and see if you can find Isaac Asimov's essay "Lost in the non-translation" on understanding them.

Does anyone actually think someone can get rich off of welfare? Sure its definatly rich compared to where some people come from, but its not american rich.

But nah, lets send them back to where they came from so they can rot and live out their lives in poor conditions, while we spend that money we saved from not paying them welfar on Gas to drive to the local fast food place, and buy more fat than these people get in a month, Then come back and watch cable TV. Why, because we are america.
But dont worry, one day a year, on christmas time, we will give a buck to the poor, and feel proud because we think we have really helped someone.
