I thought these two articles might be of interest.
The first article is by Arthur Jeffery, the second one criticizes his work. The Quest of the Historical Muhammad What Does Jeffery Actually Say? Also, here are some reviews of Ibn Warraq: http://www.secularislam.org/reviews/index.htm And lastly, here is a poem by Al Ma'arri that I thought was pertinent. The Two Universal Sects They all err—Moslems, Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians: Humanity follows two world-wide sects: One, man intelligent without religion, The second, religious without intellect.
