I know for a fact that my conservative mother would not buy me anything from hello kitty if it was put mainly on adult novelty items.

I believe the correct plural of penis in English is penises. If you want to go back to the Latin, the plural is penes. Although that literally means "tails," I wouldn't doubt it was used as a euphemism in Roman times. (Vagina/vaginae would be Latin for "sheath/sheaths.")
