I've managed to catch rats in conventional spring loaded rat traps this way, and I'd guess you can do the same with mouse traps:

You'll need peanut butter and cheesecloth or thread. The idea is to get the threads & peanut butter wrapped around the little paddle that holds the bait that trips the neck-breaker. If you do it right they get their teeth tangled in the thread & spring the trap.

W@L's suggestion sounds good, too, if you can find a way to keep your dog away from it.

You want to take care of the problem before the babies can fend for themselves.

I'd recommend napalm.

That'll learn 'em good!

I agree with kwigibo, go high tech zap the bastards. move into the twentyfirst century use technology.

electrocute the evil murderous of at least disease carrying vermin.

seriously. the zapper thing does seem to be an idea way to deal with a mouse problem for a pet owner. ( I am of course assuming that the thing is set up so that there is no way for your dog to get shocked.

What you need is WMD's. - weapons of mouse destruction!!

Speak to your local republican representative. Failing that, wait for a more local international conflict and go looting chemical weapons of mouse destruction.

then you can just catch them and put them outside
The mice than people find in their homes do not want to be outside. They want to be inside where the food and shelter are. Put them outside and they will try to find a way back inside. They have adapted to life with humans.

I know someone who has an interesting way of dealing with the mice and rats which his cats bring inside and then turn loose. He uses an air pistol on them. I wouldn't recommend this method unless you are a very good shot or you're likely to cause more damage than the rodents do.

Weapons of Mouse Destruction! I Love it!

I caught another one last night with my last remaining sticky trap, gotta get some more today.
I snuck into the room later with a flashlight and saw yet another mouse, he took off at warp speed. Those things can really move.
The only problem with the sticky traps is you're stuck with a live mouse stuck to a piece of plastic, now what? I didn't have the heart to throw it in the trash to starve to death stuck on a piece of plastic so I wrapped it in newspaper and stomped as quickly as I could, quick and painless, I hope anyway.
Catch and release would only serve till it found it's way back inside, nalpalm would probably set my house on fire, poison, maybe, but I worry about Bowser, I think I might go with Kwigibo's zapper thing.
Thanks!

That's the problem with live catch traps - either you have to kill the creature or leave it to suffer. The zappers (presumably) & neck breakers do the job quickly & efficiently.

If you try the zapper, please let me know how well it works. Every winter a new rat tries to rehab the underside of my house!

You must live closer to me than I thought. Howdy neighbour. *waves*

Tupperware is pretty good for the prevention of mice and rats. If you can get your cereals, flour, and so in into good, airtight containers, then you'll deprive the little bastards of food and prevent the little mousy baby-boom.
