There are basically two major streams of religion - the Mahayana (greater vehicle) and the Hinayana(lesser vehicle). The Mahayana Buddhists sought to spread this teaching to others in contrary to the Hinayana Buddhists who isolated themselves from the rest and are more concerned about attaining their own enligtenment. What you say about Buddhism sound more Hinayana-ish. Buddha never said anything about types of 'Buddhism'..again this is stuff disciples created after he was gone..you miss the point... Buddhism is a philosophy of life that leads to freedom and truth. The most important thing that it exists for the welfare for people. I would think Buddha would say, 'Based on the Buddhist philosophy, start reforming oneself to be a better person, learn to master the art of living, be a great example of how life can be lived and enjoyed and help others to do the same.' I would not disagree with that.. for the most part.... namaste, Be master of mind , rather than mastered by mind. |

Do we 'know' what Jesus really said...?
A lot of these NT passages could be from others who wrote down the Gospels.... |

We aren't even sure Jesus was a historical character. As far as I'm concerned, he was a reforming Jew, a rebel against rabbinical hypocrisy and corruption, and was crucified to remove his dangerous opposition. He was later made into a Messiah, and his story was fused with the beliefs of the Mithra cult, a widespread cult in the Roman Empire those days (Mithra was born on the winter solstice to a virgin). Again: Buddhism doesn't consign me to eternal torture if I reject. Rejection will only keep me in samsara for a couple of incarnations. The Jesus religion, on the other hand, is a one-try test: you can do the test only once, and if you fail you fail forever. Evil, disgusting and disgraceful. Give me Buddha over Jesus any day. |
