I'd like to get a board game that involves lots of strategy and thinking, possibly just a small tactical game but a large scale strategy game would be good too. Any suggestions?

I suggest Othello. Easy and very hard.
Edited to add that I also think chess would be great... |

Avalon Hill's Website
I used to play one of their "simpler" games (Gettysburg; don't know if it's available any more). It was pretty fun. |

Let's see..
For not complex, but playability high, try Avalon Hill's Victory in the Pacific. Simple rules, but the use of dice to decide battles, plus a large number of strategies and good game balance, make for many hours of fun. I bitterly regret that this game disappeared from my collection. Another highly playable game is A House Divided. Definitely one of the most enjoyable simple games out there. GDW's Bulge game, Attack in the Ardennes, is also extremely playable and only slightly more complex. Same basic gaming system, but a lot more pieces and the strategy, especially for the Allied side, is much more patient and subtle. I like Axis and Allies but hours of playing it have convinced me that the Axis position is unwinnable if the Allies play their optimal strategy. Another good game, but hours long, is Avalon Hill's Civilization and Advanced Civilization. There is also a computer version. This game is fun, easy, and VERY subtle. Finding time to play will be a serious problem, though. For longer and more complex games, no game beats Third Reich, Avalon Hill's classic boardgame of WWII. Their The Civil War is equally good, but both games require a large commitment of time, brains, and space to play. I do not recommend Diplomacy. Too many fistfights and too many hurt friendships. As always, though, finding partners, not games, is the real problem. Vorkosigan |
