A few more things about NDEs.

1. There are 2 prospective studies that have been done of the NDE, and they show that only a quite small number of those who "die" experience anything remarkable. Most have no memory of the dead time.

2. The phenomenology of NDEs has some fairly consistent aspects, but the specifics are quite variable. Its very clear that culture and prior experience exert a strong effect on what is experienced during the NDE.

3. There is no evidence beyond anecdotes to suggest any sort of true OOBE or ESP happens during OBEs. The few attempts to document such occurences under controlled circumstances have so far yielded no positive results.

4. All of the more remarkable phenomenological aspects of the NDE are replicated in some neurological disorders and drug-induced states (particularly ketamine and DMT). It is something of a misnomer to call such states NDEs.

There is plenty of good info on these points on the following threads. Unfortunately the formatting is all f'd up, so you'll have to work to extract that info.

Visual hallucinations and NDEs

Out-of-body experiences

Brain-An instrument of soul!

In her book, Dyig to Live, Susan Blakemore recounts how she wrote to the author of the book (Tart, Moody, Ring, one of those guys), asking for more info, and how that author admitted to her (and to another enquiring researcher) that the individual did not exist, but was a fictional composite. I'll have to find the reference when I get home later.
I saw this earlier when I was searching for info on blind NDEs. Scroll down to near the bottom of this page:

Or you may be thinking of Larry Dossey's Recovering the Soul where he reports on a patient named Sarah who had a vivid visual NDE even though she was blind from birth. Dossey has admitted that Sarah was not a real person. She was a "composite," made up to "dramatically illustrate the key features of non-local ways of knowing." Dossey admitted to Susan Blackmore that he made Sarah's story up so he could illustrate his belief "that non-local ways of gaining information bypass the senses and are ultimately independent of the brain." [Blackmore, p. 132]
The amazon review of Mindsight I posted above mentioned that the book has "a pasted-in disclaimer telling you to ignore the Author's Note and Appendix because the case presented therein is now believed to be a fraud", I suspect it was the same one.

ah well, at least I'm spared the effort of restating the obvious; if the neuro evidence does not even coherently, let alone cogently, point to the existence of a putative supernatural, then it's hardly evidence for a supernatural.
