Good job! See now, once you catch on, calculus really isn't that hard.

Curse you all for answering the question before I could! I love calculus application problems. To Steve, go ahead and take integral calculus even if it's not required. Learning intregrals will increase you understanding of what calculus is really about, and do wonderful things for your critical thinking skills.

Of course, I think everyone should go all the way thru multivariate...consequence of being a math major I guess...

Lemme try this....

r = 2 * t

A = (1/2) * pi * (r^2)

substitute 2t for r...
therefore A = (1/2) * pi * ((2*t)^2)

A = 2 * pi * (t^2)

dA/dt = 4 * pi * t

if t=40, then

dA/dt = 160 * pi

Huzzah!

It sounds like a course in which you learn normal math but get scolded severely every time you try to divide something by zero.

The calculus is the easiest part of calculus. The hard part is all that algebra one has to do after the calculus or in the case of applied problems figuring out the equation (or whatever) to use.

Ensign Steve,
If you still go on with maths after your exam, got tou your calculus course up to the end. You will need what you learn there.

You are absolutely right! It takes about half a minute and two lines of paper to do the derivation. Then it takes the rest of the afternoon and the rest of the page to factor out the common terms. And that's of course where I would make all my mistakes.

What I did on the test was to graph my original, expanded answer on my calculator, and my final, simplified answer. Then I would work and re-work the problem until I finally came up with only one graph. Sneaky!
