I posed this question all the time to my Christian roommates...the response I usually got was that God didn't want anyone with him in heaven against his or her will, so we had to go through this life in order to either accept him voluntarily or "choose hell."

That argument usually devolved into a free will debate, in which they argued that God couldn't reveal himself conclusively without taking away our free will. I usually responded to that by arguing that there is conclusive evidence that the chair I'm sitting in exists, yet I'm still free to choose not believing in it if I so desire. But, anyway...

there has to be some entertainment for those chosen to be saved, and what better entertainment than watching heathens getting perpetually burned?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you saying that god doesn't speak to me personally because he already knows I won't believe him? Hmmm, where is the free will in that scenario? If I truly had free will, god would show himself to me and allow me to make my decision.

Sounds an awful lot like god created me just to send to hell.
