Although I may not agree totally with PE, I am indebted to Dr. Gould for his clarity and plain speech in his general works on evolution. His writings convinced me that I had been cheated by wishy-washy teachers concerning a fundamental tenet of Biology - evolution is the ruling paradigm.

I had the good fortune of attending his lecture in Dallas a few years ago and meeting him afterwards. The loss seems more personal, now.

Thank you, Dr. Gould.

My new year's resolution was to read more of his works. I too never realised he was ill.

Bugger - his essays were great! I read a great epitaph though:
"His equilibrium will never again be punctuated"

A black day indeed
When I read about his death (also on this forum) I was really shocked but more so by some of the replies. However, I was not really surprised by them.

BTW I knew he had cancer but does anyone know what sort of cancer caused his death?

As far as is known by his life and lack of testimony as a Christian, this is an accurate description of what Dr. Gould would say right now to anyone who would listen:

Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

Evolutionists are Christ-deniers as Jesus Himself did not believe in evolution or other such modern fables.
See you in Hell, S.J. Gould!

To put it another way, the good professor has gone extinct.

He may be gone, but he'll be misquoted forever.

The upshot is that Dawkins moves to the front of the "Evolution Expert" rolodex.

I wonder if this is a reference to Gould's being an agnostic, or his being Jewish.

Those freepers are really sick. Gould has only been gone for a few hours and they're already calling him an "ambassador of the devil" and joking about him burning in hell for denying the "truth" of creationism.

A little light on a sad subject from Slashdot:

Quote:
Wherever he is now I'm certain he's explaining something to someone.

God: so how did I do that thing with the platypus again?
Stephen: its easy. lets use baseball as an example...
