Yeah, with people thinking the world is 6000 years old lurking about, you can never be too sure. Here's a fun little bit of info from a christian web board that I just came across:

"Christ's blood shed at the Cross would have had one red blood cell for each human that will ever exist on earth. "

A bit off topic, but tell your brother about deviantart.com

I also did not pick up on that "Why should I?" response till I saw the comic.

Talking UGH

Well, it was my birthday on the 22nd. So yesterday I got a package in the mail with some birthday gifts from my brother. A CD, a DVD, and, oh yeah! "[i]The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.

UGH.

I haven't started reading it yet. I just read the Foreword, and skimmed for a second. Gee, so so far I've read that most atheists are atually just afraid of God! We're just unwilling to believe because we don't want to change our lifestyles! Oh, and, "The majority of people in most cultures do not need to be convinced of His deity, nor of their needof Him as Savior."
Right, so according to this guy most people believe Jesus is God! That explains why the majority of the world isn't Christian...no wait, it doesn't. This book even includes the horribly fallacious Trilemma argument! This is insulting. Now I don't know what to do. I really want to get him a birthday gift too, something like "Losing Faith in Faith" or another book about deconverting. See how he likes it. But I know that would just exacerbate things further. I want to write him and tell him how insulting it is to have just explained to him over multiple emails emphatically how atheists don't fear God or anything like that only to have him send me a book that tells me that I really do just fear God. Nevermind that I still haven't responded to his last email.

I don't know what to do now. I hope he doesn't expect me to read this enormous steaming pile of horseshit.

Hey, sounds like something fun to read and laugh at. He obviously did it in response to the discussion you two had (and it wasn't the only thing he gave you). So sending him a copy of "Losing Faith in Faith" sounds fine, along with a copy of Toy Story on DVD (the atheistic parable that it is) and, oh, say, I don't know, some chinese food gift certificates or something.

Hey BBT,

Try not to give him- for his b-day or other occasion- any anti-religious stuff. Too obvious and he wont read it anyway.

Give him something fun! like the complete works of Douglas Adams(Trillian loves D.Adams!) and Kurt Vonnegut. Carl Sagan also (Candles, Dragons, and Billions are all great)---not as humorous but still an easy read. All these books tend to open up the mind in entertaining ways. Then, if he is science minded, there are good books by Michio Kaku or James Gleick about future oriented technologies and theories. All fun stuff.

He may not prefer reading these (I can't possibly imagine it but I know some people don't!), but its worth a subtle try!!

bonus footage here:

Ford, explaining 4 mad years on prehistoric earth:
Quote:
"`... then I decided that I was a lemon for a couple of weeks. I kept myself amused all that time jumping in and out of a gin and tonic.'
Arthur cleared his throat, and then did it again.
`Where,' he said, `did you...?'
`Find a gin and tonic?' said Ford brightly. `I found a small lake that thought it was a gin and tonic, and jumped in and out of that. At least, I think it thought it was a gin and tonic.'
`I may,' he addded with a grin which would have sent sane men scampering into the trees, `have been imagining it.'"

I have found that Josh McDowell books fit very nicely into most standard trash receptacles. Toss the book, and don't mention it again. If your brother asks, tell him you threw it away.
