But this is a time of paradox. There is one superpower, but many options and an infinite number of unforeseeable consequences. The option taken now is Wilsonian, remaking the world in our own image.
Interesting that he should reference Wilson, who had good ideas but no one listened to him. The one idea of his that the world listened to, the League of Nations, his own country then rejected!

There are people in high places here who believe that we should declare victory in Iraq and get the hell out of there -- let the Iraqis have a nice civil war. Maybe we could finally call the United Nations and then blame them for everything.
Shortly after the major military action ended, I heard that the UN was calling to take over the reconstruction and administration of the country. I'm of the mind that we should have taken them up on that offer. It'd get our troops home sooner, and keep us from being the sole target of terrorism. IMHO, we should also scale our relationship with Israel back to one that's primarily economic. I wonder why we don't. Is it out of fear that other Arab nations would gang up on little Israel? They're pretty tough. I say let 'em go.

This is the problem with being the world's police force, everyone likes to have the big guy on their side when things are tough, but they'd like to do some things that they know we won't approve of. So, they love us when we help them, and hate us when we defend someone they don't agree with.

I don't think it should be our job to say, OK Iraqis, this is the kind of government you're going to have now. We should take sort of a moderator/mediator role, but let them make up their own minds, and then respect their decision (even if we don't agree with it). I just think being overly involved in the Middle East is just more trouble than it's worth.
