We take our freedoms far too lightly. It took thousands of years to win them and they could disappear practically overnight.

gregg,

i can agree with this point in principle. my problem with the horrifying camp experience, well one of hte problems, really , was that this was carried out by a bunch of church youth volunteers who had taken a week of vacation to be at camp. no one had any formal education or training or experience with dealing with kids outside of church.

if you are going to scare the shit out of people, you should at least be qualified to deal with the aftermath : fear, terror, trauma.

those things leave a psychological mark!!

altho in retrospect im not sure i should be that freaked out by the whole deal....most of my experiences with fundy religion are of fear...fear of burning in hell, fear of not believing, fear of 'end times'.

while fear can be an effective means of social control, its a lame way to live....

bree, my curiousity has the best of me..what was the exorcism experience??

Theists have the same problem. They simply add an arbitrary interpretation of a holy book to the mix, but the same book gets interpreted an infinite number of ways by different individuals; partly because it doesn't really talk about the modern problem in question and also because there are contradictory verses that can fall on either side of many issues, so it becomes necessary to decide which verses apply to the current situation... in essence an even more subjective situation than the rationalist ethical approach.

Default Most traumatic experience WITH fundies

I never was a fundie, but I still remember vividly going with my two brothers and one of their friends to watch a karate demonstration at Tri City Baptist Church near Independence, MO. (The church was only a quarter mile or so from our house.) We sat in the back and watched a guy break a board, then commence witnessing. Disappointed and bored, we got up to leave. Karate Guy saw us, pointed at us, and roared, "HEY!! YOU KIDS IN THE BACK! SIT DOWN!!!!"

Needless to say, we took off. And, believe it or not, we were CHASED. And not only that (although my memory is vague on the details here), my second oldest brother was CAUGHT AND TAKEN BACK TO THE CHURCH. Fortunately, the morons came to their senses and let him go pretty quick.

They're lucky we didn't sue them for their stupid church and grounds and everything therein.

Default karate demonstration??

would that have been by 'power ministries' or something similar?

bunch of buffed up weight lifters who pump iron and break shit and preach, no YELL at you? they came to our church...and school......

their 'hook' for getting onto campus was that they were clearly 'athletes' that would have something to say about weightlifting and therefore should be allowed on campus as visitors....wtf????

Its easier to believe strongly in something if you're being persecuted for it.

This works for everyone, including atheists.

Topic: Most traumatizing experience as a former fundy??

Too numerous to even begin to list. (physically and emotionally)
The exorcisms were one of the worst.

While I doubt it was intentional, I've heard of people dying at exorcisms..
