Thanks, Stephen for the report. Very interesting.

Was this his first appearance after accepting the "Freedom of Speech" award in Cleveland?

Did anybody bring up the issue of not allowing reporters there?

Gary,

Actually, the Toledo appearance happened before the free speech award incident. Scalia spoke at UT on Monday, stayed overnight and taught a class at UT law school on Tuesday morning. After that he headed to John Carroll U. and gave a speech there Tuesday night. The Cleveland City Club appearance, where the free speech award flap happened, took place on Wednesday (in the morning I think).

From what I've heard, Scalia sets the same ground rules for all his public appearances -- no TV cameras or tape recorders. When he imposed the same conditions for an event at which he received a freedom of speech award, he melted irony meters all over the state.
