Thumbs up Michael Moore's Oscar Speech

Who saw it? I loved it.

Go Michael!! I was pretty disgusted by the boos, though.

And I sure don't envy the guy who had to follow him.

I just saw the last part of it. It was terrific. He just kept talking through the boos (of the self-indulgent millionaires in the audience). Wait and see how the mainstream media attack him for his "tastelessness."

Aside from Moore, Bill Maher, and George Carlin, where are the voices of dissent and skepticism in the entertainment culture?

I'm stupid, who is Michael Moore and for what did he win?

While I agree with the sentiments expressed, I'm much more impressed with the subtle jab of Steve Martin ("Well, I'm glad they cut back on the glitz...you probably noticed there was no fancy red carpet tonight. That'll send them a message.") and the people who showed up in fuel-efficient gasoline-electric hybrid cars as a protest to oil usage. Even the presenters who have thus far slipped in their own opinions (the guy from Minority Report who introduced U2, for example) did so tastefully and appropriately.

All the same, I'm not surprised Moore did what he did. Look at the film he created, the one he won the award for, for Chrissakes!

He makes documentaries, one of the most famous of which was Roger and Me. He also hosted a show called TV Nation and wrote the book Stupid White Men. If any of that helps.

He won for his documentary Bowling for Columbine.

Exactly, it would have been far more disturbing (to me) if Moore hadn't said anything about the current situation.

CNN's editing of the quote is interesting:

"I've invited my fellow documentary nominees on stage with us here in solidarity with me," he said, "because we like non-fiction and we live in fictitious times. ... We have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. We are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you."

from: http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movi...ars/index.html

Left out the part about a fictitious president, etc. Also about the pope being against us.

I also noticed this little jab: "Despite Moore's remarks, at the Oscars the entertainment business primarily supplied what it was asked to: entertainment. "

But maybe I'm reading too deeply...
